Adventuring into the crisp, cool air with our frosty breath and rosy cheeks, the summer tans fade, but the apple-red glow appearing with long days spent outside are associated with natural beauty and good health. At a time when many plants exhibit dormancy, Graptoveria ‘Bashful’™ prevails. The ‘Bashful’™ transforms from a mint green to a blushed rosy pink. Similar to our winter glow, the succulent turns a bright, translucent pink from direct sunlight and cool temperatures. If grown in the shade, it will lose that coloration and fade to its original green. Not only does the cool weather provide its leaves with a cheery red hue, it also blooms small white and yellow flowers between winter and spring. Occasionally, its flowers are a pale gold with reddish speckles, which is a common characteristic of Graptopetalum. Wintertime brings out its most beautiful colors, but temperatures under 36°F will damage the ‘Bashful’™. House the plant inside to protect it from frost. Place it on a windowsill or countertop in partial to full sun; preferably morning sun. Plant it in a container where the soil will drain efficiently and water only when the soil is dry to the touch. The ‘Bashful’™ is petite, but proves to be a showstopper with its mighty pop of color. Smooth, fleshy petals lay symmetrically clumped around the base of the rosette. Graptoveria are low-growing and cultivated for their distinct shapes and colors. Once established, they grow out rather than up, extending up to 6-9” in diameter. ‘Bashful’™ will eventually produce chicks around the base of the plant. Both beautiful and easy to grow, the hybrid has the best attributes from its parents, the Graptopetalum and Echeveria. Graptoveria ‘Bashful’™ proves to be a fun beginner succulent because it is fast-growing and hardier than typical Echeveria varieties.
