DESCRIPTION
Calatheas show off some of the most eye-catching foliage in the houseplant world and Calathea makoyana is no exception. This tropical houseplant displays glossy large oval-shaped leaves whose wonderfully intricate pattern resembles a peacock’s tail feathers. Hence the nickname peacock plant. Also known as cathedral windows and part of the prayer plant family, this calathea will fulfill anyone’s desire for adding a showy, boldly colorful and marked statement plant to a kitchen, bathroom, office, or other space. The beautifully detailed leaf pattern is expressed with alternating shades of light green and dark green. The underside is burgundy. Calathea makoyana has an upright, clumping growth habit, with new leaves emerging from the center of the plant and spreading outwards. This gives the plant a full, bushy appearance.

Peacock plants prefer medium to bright, indirect light. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry or mostly dry, preferably with distilled or filtered water or rainwater. Using a humidifier, water-filled pebble tray, or grouping with other plants are three ways to increase humidity. Feed monthly with houseplant food during the active growing season, typically spring and summer. A happy peacock plant can grow up to 2 feet tall and wide, seemingly showing off like a proud male peacock.

APPEARANCE

Part of what makes succulents so fascinating are the myriad ways they express themselves throughout the year, depending on light, season, temperature, soil, and hydration. For those and other reasons, the plants you receive may not look exactly as they appear on our website.
